Summer Experience 2020

In light of the unprecedented public health crisis and resulting fallout, many of our students no longer traveled to Washington, DC this summer for in-person internships and to participate in our typical summer series of events. Thus, we moved online to create a robust suite of interactive programming, fora, and training to accommodate our students virtually. We were pleased to offer an array of programs to support our students’ intellectual growth, skills development, and career advancement. For our students who had not planned to be in Washington, DC this summer, this was a great opportunity to experience much of what we have to offer beyond our campus chapter experience.

SUMMER SEMINARS

Students explored the essence of statecraft through our online seminars: American Grand Strategy taught by Princeton University’s Aaron Friedberg, and War and Politics taught by AEI’s Kenneth Pollack.

AMERICAN EXCEPTIONALISM READING GROUP

Led by AHS Program Director Valerian Sikhuashvili, this reading group brought together chapter officers nationwide. The first session was run by Dr. Alan Levine, who led a discussion on Foundations of American Exceptionalism.

CAREER INFORMATION SESSIONS

Through our network of partner organizations, we hosted brown bag lunches with recruiters, alumni, and scholars that introduced students to a variety of career opportunities in Washington and provided them with information on hiring procedures. Policy community recruiters led information sessions on careers with their organizations and what job candidates can do to be competitive. We also hosted workshops on writing résumés, crafting cover letters, and standing out in interviews throughout the course of the summer.

Speaker Events

We hosted several virtual events with our distinguished scholars and practitioners on key foreign policy challenges facing the United States.

Skills Development Programs

We offered chapter officer skill development sessions, such as workshops on writing and editing, officer leadership, and team building. These sessions were open to all active and incoming chapter officers.

AMERICA’S ROLE IN THE WORLD BOOK SERIES

Both students and alumni engaged with our speakers through interactive virtual book talks. We mailed a complimentary copy of the book to the first 20 AHS students who signed up.
